Hereafter

Title: Hereafter
Directed by: Clint Eastwood
Written by: Peter Morgan
Starring: Matt Damon, Cécile De France, Frankie McLaren, Steve Schirripa

Clint Eastwood’s latest offering “Hereafter” is an applaudable effort but doesn’t strike as one of his best and sees the Hollywood’s hardest men take a dip in form. Focusing on death and the afterlife the film follows three characters and their search for what happens to us after we die. It’s unlike most Eastwood’s other films as he uses the multinarrative technique to construct the film, which at times is as effective as one would like it to be and at times seems a bit flat. The film follows George Lonegan a mercurial psychic haunted by his gift, Marie a French news reporter who dies for a few moments and then comes back to life and James who loses his twin brother to a hit and run. The three trudge through their existence in loneliness, anxiety and insecurity in their search for a definition of the afterlife. It’s filled with some out of this world directing especially the scene wherein Damon’s Lonegan character and Melanie – plated by Bryce Dallas Howard - discuss themselves whilst blindfolded and conducting a tasting test. Outside of that it fails to succeed where many other multinarrative films succeed it essentially lack the bang of Innaratu Gonzalez’s “Babel” or “Amorres Perros” and Thomas Anderson’s “Magnolia” but does show glimmers of Eastwood’s mastery.

All in all its pleasing but not spectacular, and makes perfect sense as to why Eastwood chose the subject matter considering he’s about 80 and knocking on Death’s door. Ja Eastwood’s so effing hard he knocks on death door not the other way around.

I give it 6 Hoers.
